Acute lead poisoning is a potential risk for methamphetamine abusers.
The percentages of youths reporting binge alcohol use and use of cigarettes and marijuana in the past month were lower among those who perceived great risk in using these substances than among those who did not perceive great risk. For example, in 2008, 5.0 percent of youths aged 12 to 17 who perceived great risk from "having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week" reported binge drinking in the past month (consumption of five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage on a single occasion on at least 1 day in the past 30 days); by contrast, past month binge drinking was reported by 11.5 percent of youths who saw moderate, slight, or no risk from having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. Past month marijuana use was reported by 1.5 percent of youths who saw great risk in smoking marijuana once a month compared with 9.4 percent of youths who saw moderate, slight, or no risk.
2008 National Survey on Drug Use & Health provides the latest data on prevalence and correlates of substance use, serious psychological distress, depression, related problems, and treatment in the civilian population aged 12 or older in the U.S.
Based on 2006-2009 combined data, among persons aged 12 or older who needed but did not receive illicit drug or alcohol use treatment, felt a need for treatment, and made an effort to receive treatment, the most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) no health coverage and could not afford cost (36.8 percent), (b) not ready to stop using (30.5 percent), (c) able to handle the problem without treatment (10.2 percent), (d) no transportation/inconvenient (9.7 percent), (e) had health coverage but did not cover treatment or did not cover cost (8.8 percent), (f) might have negative effect on job (8.6 percent), (g) might cause neighbors/community to have negative opinion (8.5 percent), and (h) did not feel need for treatment at the time (7.1 percent).

Methadone Detoxification

Methadone detoxification provides opioid dependent patients with medication, health, social, and rehabilitation services that relieve withdrawal symptoms, reduce physiological cravings, and allow normalization of the body's functions. Methadone detoxification has been available for over 30 years and has been confirmed effective for opioid dependence in numerous scientific studies.

Methadone is used to help people trying to get off heroin and other drugs. Unfortunately, this substance which can be so helpful to recovering addicts is itself addictive. Going through methadone detoxification can be more difficult than getting off other opioids.

Methadone detoxification helps manage withdrawal symptoms such as:

  • backache
  • diarrhea
  • dilated pupils
  • excessive tears
  • general malaise
  • goose bumps
  • hot and cold chills
  • insomnia
  • irritability
  • muscle and bone pain
  • nausea
  • opiate craving
  • panic
  • perspiration
  • restlessness
  • runny nose
  • stomach cramps
  • vomiting
  • yawning

When you are ready to get help with your methadone addiction, look to a methadone detoxification center for help. Methadone detoxification can be very difficult on the person going through withdrawal. The dosage needs to be lowered slowly, and this process needs to be supervised by experienced medical personnel. When you are considering different methadone detoxification programs, ask about the center's experience with methadone users. You will also want to get some idea about the daily schedule, as well as how the staff will give you the support you need to get off methadone.

A very important factor in the chances of avoiding a relapse is to immediately check into a rehab center in order to continue the methadone detoxification and recovery process. Many rehab programs will recommend that once graduates complete drug rehab, they enter a sober living home in order to continue the process of maintaining their sobriety while re-entering everyday life.
