Drug Statistics and Facts
Each year students spend $5.5 billion on alcohol, more then they spend on soft drinks, tea, milk, juice, coffee, or books combined.
In 2007, the criminal justice system was the largest referral source for all treatment admissions in the US (37 percent of all admissions). These admissions were almost twice as likely to be employed either full or part-time as other admissions (42 percent v. 22 percent) and slightly less likely to drop out of treatment (22 percent v. 27 percent). Over the past 15 years, the fastest growth in criminal justice referrals has been among admissions younger than 18 and admissions for marijuana and methamphetamine abuse.
Of the 2.3 million people aged 12 or older who received specialty substance use treatment in 2008, 983,000 received treatment for alcohol use only, 632,000 received treatment for illicit drug use only, and 577,000 received treatment for both alcohol and illicit drug use. These estimates are similar to the estimates for 2007 and for 2002.
Youths aged 12 to 17 were asked a number of questions related to the extent of support, oversight, and control that they perceived their parents exercised over them in the year prior to the survey. In 2008, among youths aged 12 to 17 enrolled in school in the past year, 79.3 percent reported that in the past year their parents always or sometimes checked on whether or not they had completed their homework, and 70.2 percent reported that their parents limited the amount of time that they spent out with friends on school nights. Both of these rates reported in 2008 were similar to those reported in 2007 and remained statistically unchanged from the rates reported in 2002. However, in 2008, 80.0 percent reported that their parents always or sometimes provided help with their homework, which was similar to the rate in 2007 (80.9 percent) but was lower than the rate in 2002 (81.4 percent).

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Day Treatment

Drug and alcohol day treatment offers recovering drug addicts flexible and effective treatment. This form of rehabilitation is based on a structured non-residential substance abuse treatment modality. Each person.s schedule is created around his or her individualized needs.

Drug and alcohol day treatment is a lesser known form of rehabilitation, but serves as a middle road between inpatient and outpatient rehab. Some day treatment programs operate seven and a half hours a day, six days a week. Others may operate five days a week, three hours a day, and include childcare. Drug and alcohol day treatment accommodates clients who need more than outpatient drug rehab but do not require the supervision and intensity of residential treatment or other types of inpatient rehab.

For those who require slightly less structure than a "live in" program, drug and alcohol day treatment may be the appropriate level of care. Clients attend groups during the day at treatment facilities. Day treatment programs often follow the same schedule as residential clients. However, they are free to return home at the end of the day unlike those attending residential treatment. This treatment modality provides structure and support while helping the client begin integrating back into his or her daily life.

Drug and alcohol day treatment is effective for addicts who need more guidance towards recovery with longer sessions and extended periods of support from groups and counselors. Generally, this kind of drug rehab is favored among those who have a safe, sober environment to return to at the end of the day. Many adults with a spouse and children opt for this kind of treatment because it will still allow them to be a part of family life before and after day treatment. While this is a valuable resource for recovery, it is not a good .fit. for all situations.
