Drug Statistics and Facts
Marijuana is the most frequently used illegal drug in the United States. Nearly 69 million Americans over the age of 12 have tried marijuana at least once.
Marijuana was the illicit drug with the highest rate of past year dependence or abuse in 2009, followed by pain relievers and cocaine. Of the 7.1 million persons aged 12 or older classified with dependence on or abuse of illicit drugs in 2009, 4.3 million were dependent on or abused marijuana or hashish (representing 1.7 percent of the total population aged 12 or older, and 60.5 percent of all those classified with illicit drug dependence or abuse), 1.9 million persons were classified with dependence on or abuse of pain relievers, and 1.1 million persons were classified with dependence on or abuse of cocaine.
On 2007, opiates accounted for almost one fifth (19 percent) of all substance abuse treatment admissions. Heroin admissions were almost three times as likely as admissions for other opiates to report cocaine as a secondary substance of abuse (51 vs. 18 percent), but only half as likely to report marijuana as a secondary substance of abuse (11 vs. 22 percent). Heroin admissions were nearly three times as likely as other opiate admissions to report five or more prior treatment admissions (26 vs. 9 percent).
Past month illicit drug use also was associated with the level of past month alcohol use. Among youths aged 12 to 17 in 2008 who were heavy drinkers (i.e., consumed five or more drinks on the same occasion on each of 5 or more days in the past 30 days), 68.5 percent also were current illicit drug users, which was higher than the rate among nondrinkers (4.3 percent). The rate of current illicit drug use among youths reporting heavy drinking in the past month increased from 60.1 percent in 2007 to 68.5 percent in 2008, and a similar increase in illicit drug use (from 37.9 to 42.6 percent) was seen among youths who engaged in binge drinking (i.e., consumption of five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the past month).

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Day Treatment

Drug and alcohol day treatment offers recovering drug addicts flexible and effective treatment. This form of rehabilitation is based on a structured non-residential substance abuse treatment modality. Each person.s schedule is created around his or her individualized needs.

Drug and alcohol day treatment is a lesser known form of rehabilitation, but serves as a middle road between inpatient and outpatient rehab. Some day treatment programs operate seven and a half hours a day, six days a week. Others may operate five days a week, three hours a day, and include childcare. Drug and alcohol day treatment accommodates clients who need more than outpatient drug rehab but do not require the supervision and intensity of residential treatment or other types of inpatient rehab.

For those who require slightly less structure than a "live in" program, drug and alcohol day treatment may be the appropriate level of care. Clients attend groups during the day at treatment facilities. Day treatment programs often follow the same schedule as residential clients. However, they are free to return home at the end of the day unlike those attending residential treatment. This treatment modality provides structure and support while helping the client begin integrating back into his or her daily life.

Drug and alcohol day treatment is effective for addicts who need more guidance towards recovery with longer sessions and extended periods of support from groups and counselors. Generally, this kind of drug rehab is favored among those who have a safe, sober environment to return to at the end of the day. Many adults with a spouse and children opt for this kind of treatment because it will still allow them to be a part of family life before and after day treatment. While this is a valuable resource for recovery, it is not a good .fit. for all situations.

Drug Rehabs for Women

Drug rehab programs for women are specifically geared toward the particular treatment needs of women afflicted with drug addiction and alcoholism. Substance abuse in women has a distinctive origin, progression, and specific addiction treatment methods. A growing body of research shows that substance abuse among women and the issues surrounding their addiction differs from that of men, requiring a specialized regimen of treatment services.

Psychologically, women who become addicted to drugs or alcohol have a different narrative and profile than men who become addicted. As an often-underestimated rule, women have a greater tendency to have developed a drug addiction to cope with trauma and emotional pain. Women also have a range of social and cultural pressures and issues that men do not experience.

For many years, drug rehab programs were designed to offer simultaneous treatment to both men and women. And since the numbers of admissions favored men, approximately 60% to 40%, the programs were tailored more toward the male population. But recently, it has been discovered that by creating drug rehabs specifically for women, there is an greater chance that a woman would seek treatment. This is a huge step forward in the treatment of women suffering with drug addiction and alcoholism.

Spanish Speaking

Spanish speaking rehab centers specialize in helping people that have discovered within themselves the will to beat addiction, but are still searching for a way. The concept of a Spanish speaking drug and alcohol rehab has been around for over sixty years. The clients are usually bi-lingual in English and Spanish to some degree, but often a client comes in with very limited English. Counseling and questionnaires as well as information papers are offered in both languages, and the group sessions will use both languages as needed. Care is taken to be aware of the cultural diversity in vocabulary within both English and Spanish languages.

There are several different approaches to rehabilitation, but the common goal is to help people that are addicted to damaging substances learn to live happy being drug-free. Spanish speaking drug rehabilitation facilities are often completely bilingual and provide care in a culturally relevant setting. They service clients from all socio-economic backgrounds, and are committed to addressing issues relating to domestic violence, aftercare counseling, as well as housing and job development to allow the individual a functional place in his or her community.

Spanish and Latino family counseling is often the first step in making a genuine effort to stay free of alcohol and drugs. Therefore, participants are encouraged to maintain and protect their sobriety under specific guidelines. The program combines education with group therapy and individual counseling to help the client understand the addiction process. Spanish speaking programs teach its clients how to put an end to their addiction in order to maintain abstinence and achieve their treatment goals. Clients are also exposed to healthy life choices and taught how to apply these new choices to their lives.
