Heroin is processed from morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seed-pod of the Asian poppy plant.
Cocaine and coca leaves, which are classified as "narcotics" in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), neither bind at opiate receptors, nor produce morphine-like effects and are discussed in the section on stimulants. The term narcotic refers to drugs that produce morphine-like effects.
