Conviction for trafficking in heroin carries the death penalty in most South-east Asian, some East Asian and Middle Eastern countries, among which Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand are the most strict.
Among 12 to 17 year olds who had past year MDE in 2008, 37.4 percent had used illicit drugs during the same period. This was higher than the rate of 17.2 percent among youths who did not have past year MDE. Similarly, the rates of past month daily cigarette use and heavy alcohol use were higher for youths with MDE (3.6 and 3.4 percent, respectively) than for youths who did not have MDE (1.8 and 1.8 percent, respectively).
Nearly one quarter (23.7 percent) of persons aged 12 or older participated in binge drinking at least once in the 30 days prior to the survey in 2009. This translates to about 59.6 million people. The rate in 2009 is similar to the rate in 2008 (23.3 percent).
The percentage of youths who reported that marijuana, cocaine, and LSD would be easy to obtain increased with age in 2009. For example, 19.8 percent of those aged 12 or 13 said it would be fairly or very easy to obtain marijuana compared with 52.9 percent of those aged 14 or 15 and 72.2 percent of those aged 16 or 17.
