12-Step Based Programs in Montana
When a person is in the throes of drug or alcohol addiction, it can feel like being locked in windowless, blackened room. The 12 Steps were created in the early 1930s by the original founders of Alcoholics Anonymous to be a guide to help those struggling with alcohol addiction. The program was so successful early on that other support organizations were able to adapt the steps to their own particular needs, and today it's become the standard off of which many (both religious and non-religious) treatment programs—for everything from heroin to gambling--are based.
The 12 Steps: Basic Tenets
The biggest components of the 12-step system are admitting powerlessness over the substance you've become addicted to, making amends to those you've wronged, and helping others achieve sobriety. Those who have already gone through the program are expected to help "sponsor" others and be a supportive force in their life.
