But for people struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, a stable home can actually mean the difference between relapsing on the street and re-entering a productive life. A Crucial Stepping Stone
For people struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, halfway (or "transitional") housing is usually the first crucial step after being released from inpatient treatment. It's a residence, but it also provides many of the medical, psychiatric, educational, and social services that drug abusers desperately need to resist temptation and keep their sobriety. These regimented dormitories are a place for them to stabilize their life, to commit to staying sober, and to be accountable to others who are struggling with the same demons. Transitional housing time limits vary, but they usually involve a temporary residence of up to 24 months, and typical rules include respecting others in the house, doing house chores, maintaining regular employment, and respecting curfew. For former addicts this kind of structured living is an absolute lifeline.
